A million years ago, back when I was 22, the Cheryl Blossom of my college threw a huuuuuuge party at her parents Constantia mansion huis. Uber wasn’t around in those days so I ended up sleeping on a couch in one of their many lounges which was preferable to driving my car off the side of De Waal Drive. The next morning, I took a shower in her parent’s enormous marble en suite bathroom (gold taps! Errrmigod!) and she was all ‘oh, just use whatever… my mom’s got everything.’
She wasn’t joking. Cheryl’s mom really did have everything, including a Christian Dior night cream that Cheryl liked to slap on her legs and a Givenchy Hot Couture perfume that had been assigned to the lowly role of toilet spray. Just the products sitting in the shower alone could constitute a mini spa! I remember using a Thalgo shower gel that smelled like roses growing near the ocean and would go on to mention how much I loved the scent. Later, when it was time to go, Cheryl casually tossed the bottle into my car.
‘Oooh, no, no! What about your mom?’, I asked. But Cheryl insisted I keep it. ‘My mom has so many different houses she can’t keep track of what’s in which shower.’ Yoh!
As I drove away, I vowed that one day I too was going to be a multi-property maven. A woman so successful, I’d also have swanktastical bathrooms action-packed with a myriad of fancy products. So many, in fact, that my kids could hand half of them out – as literal party favours – and I wouldn’t even notice.
Fast-forward to almost 20 years later and I don’t own so much as a parking space let alone a blerrie portfolio, but I def nailed it in the ‘I shall have ten thousand products’ department. Ha! So there’s that. And… I just so happen to have Thalgo in my shower. Specifically, the Pink Sand Shower Scrub from the brand’s lovely new Joyaux Atlantique collection.
Inspired by Atlantic beaches at sunset and the power of precious marine stones, the Joyaux Atlantique consists of a fragranced body mist, hydrating dry oil and the aforementioned shower scrub. Each product – mist included – contains a hydrating precious algae extract known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. None of them smells ocean-esque, however. They all share the same soft floral scent – a serenity-inducing mix of lily and rose. Also, while it’s not mentioned, I can definitely pick up on a little magnolia.
Interestingly, the mist contains olivine extract, a semi-precious stone found on the beaches of French Guiana in South America. I have to admit I appreciate the idea of getting to spritz on a microscopic layer of gemstone ‘cos I’m one of those freaky deaky peeps who like to believe in the power of crystals. For the record, olivine is super calming, dispels negativity and attracts cold, hard kesh monneh. What’s not to love?!
I’ve found that the mist’s scent is surprisingly long-lasting, but you can really keep it going by layering it with the oil. The latter is lovely and light, absorbing in a flash to a dry finish that leaves your skin feeling supple and glowy.
As for the shower scrub, it foams up nicely and, while it includes pink sand and white quartz (fancy!), it’s incredibly gentle so I consider it less of an exfoliator and more of an ultra-luxe shower gel. Constantia mansion not included!
