If you’re a blonde who likes to get highlights, you’ll know your hair can easily be the most expensive part of your beauty routine. Even more expensive than Botox! (I’m serious. Just do the math and you’ll see I’m right!) Still, in-salon colour was something I was always willing to shell out for ‘cos, hey, blondes just have more fun.
Thing is, at the time of writing, I’m about to jet off for another prolonged stint in South East Asia. There’s just no point in spending a bomb on highlights only for them to grow out six weeks later. Thus, it’s been a couple of months since I’ve hit up my hairdresser. I’m now just growing it out for another until I’ve got a big enough regrowth chunk to blast with a bleaching spray. (I don’t like bleaching what’s already bleached ‘cos that’s the fast track to fried up frizz!)
Fortunately, there is a way to temporarily disguise my regrowth situation and this is where Schwarzkopf Root Retoucher (R99,99, Clicks) comes in.
Available in six shades, including two for blondes, it serves up immediate colour that blends like a boss and also covers grey. (Yep, my mom tried it too.) When I gave it a google I found it annoying that nobody put up colour swatches so I’ve made one for you. You’ll see Dark Blonde is actually quite dark and will look even darker on dark roots. So if you’re in doubt between the two, definitely go a shade lighter.
Okay, are you ready for a hideously unflattering close-up scalp shot?!
CAN WE PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO REVEL IN HOW FREAKING THIN MY HAIR IS RIGHT NOW?! I wasn’t exaggerating when I told you half of it fell out the other day I wasn’t kidding. And now I’ve got to sit with all these short, irritating wisps around my crown while it grows back. Bleh! (For those who aren’t regular readers, I developed a super fun vitamin B12 and iron deficiency thanks to a gut-inflaming gluten and dairy bender in Thailand. I’m highly intolerant to both but the food over there was just too good!)
Anyway, using the root retoucher is super-duper easy. Just spritz it on your roots, allow it to dry (it takes a couple of seconds) and voila! It’s that easy! There’s no skill required. You just spray and go!
Natural-looking root blendage aside, do you SEE how much THICKER my hair suddenly looks with a scalp tint? OMG! OMG!
I was also very impressed by how it managed to cover but didn’t feel like I had anything in my hair. No weird, crispy ‘paint’-feeling – even after two coats! If anything, I felt like I was wearing a little mousse. Also, it didn’t matter how many times I brushed it, the colour didn’t budge until my next shampoo. It didn’t even transfer to a white pillowcase!
Now tell me, who’s feeling lucky? I’m giving away a Schwarzkopf hair product hamper worth R750 that will include a root retoucher in a colour of your choice plus a large selection of their lovely Gliss shampoos, conditioners and treatments tailored to your hair type. (I’m currently using their new Supreme Length line and absolutely love it! Expect a full review coming soon.)
Entering is easy peasy. Simply use the comments section to tell me which of their products is your fave or what you’d most like to try. You’ll find them all on Clicks’ site where you’ll see that if you buy any three of their selected hair products and you’ll get the cheapest free until 18 June. (Yep, I’ve already tossed three of their Total Repair spray-conditioners into my virtual trolley. I’ve been using it for almost a decade and it’s still the living best!)
This competition closes at 5pm on 31 May 2019 and is open to South African residents only.
