Okay, so I’m going to rant now…

Please DON’T mail me going ‘Hey, check out my site; give me your opinion’ and then write a long defensive spiel in reply after I give you the constructive cristism you asked for. I didn’t even WANT to give it to you in the first place as I’m a busy girl.

Next time suck up the guts to say ‘Hey! Check out my site. I hope you like it and then fall all over yourself begging to blog about us for free or with zero incentive.’ ‘Cos that makes things easy; I can tell you to piss off.

Best results? ‘Hi Leigh. This is my product. Do you like it? If so I’ll send you one to try. Or give you one to giveaway on your blog. Or you can interview the schmodel who uses it, etc, etc.’ If you come to me unsolicited, I expect a little give for my take.

Now tell me peeps, am I being a total bitch here? Am I sealing the deal in a rep as a divalicious little foot stomper… or do you agree with me? And if you’re a blogger like me, do you happen to have any pet ‘here’s not how to handle me’ peeves yourself? Would love to hear ’em…

  1. Totally agree! One of my pet peeves is being sent press releases that are completely irrelevant for my publication (really, your agency won a PICA? I’m so not going to write about that).

    1. Oooh me too! Also get annoyed with super long DIY ‘articles’ i.e. ‘How to get beach hair in three easy steps using ten thousand products from just this one brand’. That’s such a waste of time for the person who wrote it ‘cos its not like we can just plak that story up as is. Couldn’t you just send me the product specs so I can mention them in my own editorial? I mean that’s how its going to have to roll out. You do know that, right? Arrgh!

      1. What’s sad is, there are loads of ‘bloggers’ who would plak it up as it is! Another of my pet peeves – people who republish press releases VERBATIM without doing any research or writing themselves. grrrrr

      2. God I HATE that! So with you. Its just plain old laziness and a lack of creativity. Also, surely the whole point of being a self-absorbed blogger (like me, hee hee) is to slap your own personal opinion on it?

    1. Ag plies babe, you’re awesome… In this case it wasn’t a PR; was someone with a new retail website who was looking to promote it themself. Perhaps they should get in touch with you so you can show ’em how good PR works. X x x

      1. Hahahah. I LOVE Belvedere vodka – the two or so write ups I have on them still get some of the highest hit ratings on my blog. For some reason people are desp to google and find out more info about it and they end up being led to me, so yay for that. ;-P X x x

  2. My personal favourite remains: “FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ON YOUR WEBSITE/BLOG” (sic, and in caps, of course) from someone I’ve never heard of, relating to an irrelevant topic (to me anyway) like a sale at an hardware store. REALLY?? And an introductory phone call/email/tea invitation goes a long way.

  3. Ur not an advertorial. Ur not being paid to convey a positive message. Ur a blog. You create editorial content – which can be good or bad. If someone comes to you with anything, they take a chance as to what u’ll write. I still believe all publicity is good publicity. Don’t go discredit itself and write only good stuff about everything, or u’ll loose your readerships trust.

    1. Shello! Jissus its been yonks. When you coming SA again? Ja, I totally agree with you; the trust thing is invaluable and helps me feel less bad whenever I turn something down. If I can’t get excited about it or think its kak, I don’t want to share it on my blog. The end.

  4. I used to have a foodie whats on type of blog about two years ago when I lived in London but that was a lifetime ago. Used to hate it when people used to send me a mail with a link to their restaurant and say ‘here you go, something for your blog’. Erm excuse me? You want ME to spend my time talking about YOUR spot so I can send people YOUR way without inviting me try it? Jolly, jolly rude!

    1. Ha ha ha. I quite like checking out other blogs. Just get pissed when would be press seekers masquerade their ‘hey, so I want you to blog about me’-ness with wanting me to check ’em out and tell them what I think. ;-P
