Clinique Chubby Stick moisturising lip colour balm review

Yesterday I received a little pakkie from Clinique containing a bunch of their new award-winning Chubby Sticks (R195 each):

Thank you Clinique!

Naturally, I wasted no time in getting swatchy:

From left to right top: Chunky Cherry, Curvy Candy, Whoppin' Watermelon. Bottom: Whole Lotta Honey, Mega Melon and Richer Raisin.

In a nut shell, Chubby Sticks are tinted lip balms in cutesy pencil-like packaging, the kind of thing you whip out of your bag and all your girlfriends immediately skree ‘ag cuuute man!’

Being ‘mechanical’, you don't have to sharpen them. Simply wind them out a bit when you start to wear down your point.

I like how they go on nice and sheer, leaving just a hint of a hint of colour on your lips. This means that even the darkest shade, Richer Raisin, is ridiculously easy to wear. My favourite colour, however, is Chunky Cherry. It’s a maraschino red that leaves your lips looking as though they’ve been stained by a lollipop. Check it out:

Is there a way to take a self-portrait snap and NOT feel like a total douche?

In regards to hydration, they’re made with moisturising mango and Shea butter. I like how they feel nice and light on your lips in a way that reminds me a bit of MAC’s Tinted Lip Conditioners. Still, if you’ve got very chapped lips in need of serious looking after, I’d probably first point you in the direction of something a little more intensive. Applying any of these to flaky-looking lips will only draw more attention to the issue.

Scent/flavour-wise, they actually don’t have any. To me, it’s a bit of a shame, really, as I’m a sucker for sweet smelling lip goodies. Still, I know countless other people absolutely HATE that, so if you’re one of them this will be a bit of a drawcard for you.

In all, if you’re looking for a gorgeously packaged lip balm that offers a subtle hint of a tint, Clinique Chubby Stick’s a good bet.

Love, love

Leigh

  1. The colour you have on – the chunky cherry looks so natural and your lips look super smooth – it looks a bit different on the swatch. The mega melon looks nice too. Your blog makes me just want to go buy stuff! (one of the things it got me to buy was the Ruby Box Collection) . ooh and that Spieza stuff you reviewed.

    1. What did you buy from Spieza and what did you think? Love their stuff… Ja, the colour can go darker on your lips than how it looks on mine, but I made a point of just applying one coat; the colour’s nice and buildable…
