Smooth operator: TRESemme Keratin Smooth shampoo & conditioner review

TRESemme have just launched a new frizz-busting hair care collection called Keratin Smooth. It makes use of hair-strengthening keratin and strand-smoothing silicone and has a low sulphate content.

For those of you who don’t know, sulphates are foaming agents. A good example is sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) which is found is just about every face wash and shampoo under the sun. While there are those who believe the ingredient to be carcinogenic, that’s a load of crap and, to date, there isn’t a shred of evidence that SLS causes cancer. Still, it can irritate those with very sensitive, reactive skin so if this is you, switching to a sulphate-free or low sulphate shampoo like TRESemme’s Keratin Smooth is a good idea. Also, for the record, TRESemme’s Naturals range is low sulphate too. Another reason to use a low SLS shampoo? It’s less likely to fade out colour treated hair.

Shiny, shiny!

Anyway, the range promises to leave your hair frizz-free for up to 48 hours. Alas, I’m not able to test that theory as I wash my super fine hair literally every single day; the slightest drop of grease makes it limp and sad-looking. But I can tell you this; this is a very nice shampoo and conditioner.

I liked that, after washing, my hair was easy peasy to detangle. Then, once my hair was dry, it did look and feel silky smooth but – the best bit – wasn’t weighed down in the least. In fact, it felt nice and bouncy. This is a nice feat for TRESemme as so many ‘smoothing’, ‘frizz-busting’ conditioners go absolutely cray cray on the silicones and end up coating your hair to the point where it feels heavy; dirty even. While dry, coarse hair is more prone to frizz than other hair types, that’s not always the case and this is a fab solution for anyone with a finer hair type that’s looking for a sleekening sham and con duo.

Price-wise, you’re looking at R78,99 for the shampoo and conditioner in a huuuge bottle. It’s a pity it’s not available in a smaller size as it’s always nice to try that first before committing to having a barrel in your shower. Still, TRESemme are famed for their awesome mini’s so who knows, they may well hit the shelves at some point.

Now tell me, have any of you given this duo a bash? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Love, love

Leigh

P.S. If you’ve had a Brazilian straightening treatment you should be using a sulphate-free shampoo to avoid washing out your newfound sleekness. TRESemme’s Keratin Smooth line is most definite low in sulphates, but it isn’t sulphate-free.

If you want to read up on sulphate-free shampoo you’ll find an in-depth article over here. The Redken option it suggests is available at selected salons in South Africa. You could also consider The Curl Company Sulphate-Free shampoo or Vichy Dercos Ultra Soothing sulphate-free shampoo, both of which are available at Clicks.

  1. Good day

My daughter had a brazillian blowout ,I would like to know if she can use the Tresemme Keratin Shampoo & Conditioner

    1. Hi Ingrid. Yes, you could use it.

But to be clear, the ideal shampoo to use (if you’ve had a Brazilian) is one that’s sulphate free. Your hair dresser or whoever gave you the treatment can offer you this.

Using a shampoo that contains sulphates (like Tresemme) isn’t going to destroy your hair but it will ensure your Brazilian washes out a lot faster.

    1. It’ll help but I think there are better treatments out there if your goal is ultimate smoothness. Maybe look into getting a Brazilian blow out and try a silicone serum like John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease.

  2. Is it just me? Does anyone else absolutely hate this shampoo?
Maybe this product will work for those who have naturally straight, non-frizzy hair despite the claims on the packaging, however I suggest anyone with even a slight natural wave to steer clear of this shampoo unless you want to resemble Hermione Granger circa Chamber of secrets at best.

Read my full rant about this product on my blog:http://voguebeach.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/the-worst-shampoo-i-have-ever-tried.html

    1. I agree with Grace

I have naturally curly and frizzy hair and I live in a humid area – so I tried this range, as I like Tresemme’s other shampoos. What a disappointment. My hair is awful. It is coarse and like straw. I gave it away after four washes.

Ingrid, KZN (not the same one as above)

  3. I need to know witch of ur product I can buy as a leave in treatment sulfate free, as I just had the brizilian treatment please, urgent. All products please.
    Regards
    Giasimi

    1. Hi Giasimi! TRESemme have low sulphate shampoos but I’m not sure any are sulphate free. Ask the hairdresser who gave you the treatment for a recommendation on good sulphate-free shampoos in your area.

  4. I tried the tresemme keratin conditioner and it smells soo bad I had an allergic reaction even hours later the perfume was in my hair. I conditions good but the smell is too much and it lingers.

  5. Leigh, you should be informed that this shampoo is not “low” in sulfate – it is “lower” in sulfate than its Silky and Smooth shampoo (as indicated by the asterisk* on the bottle), which basically could mean nothing because it could be that S&S shampoo have high sulfate content. Also, keratin shampoos in general have high sulfate content so this may just mean that Tresemme’s Keratin shampoo has less than the usual. Typical advertising tactics.

  6. I was just wondering if this product is safe to use for pregnant women?? I am 7 weeks and have been using this shampoo for about a month and a half because I almost fryed me hair in a bleaching ombré experiment..

  7. Hi, Can we use Tresemme Keratin Smooth Shampoo(Red Bottle) and Keratin Smooth Conditioner(White bottle) after Brazilian Blowdry?

    1. Hi Kimmy! You could but it’s not advised. Rather use something that’s completely sulphate-free (as opposed to low-sulphate) so you don’t wash away the results of your treatment. L’Oreal’s new Hair Expertise range is now available at Clicks and should do the trick.

      1. Thank you for the advise, can you help me with any anti dandruff shampoo which is sulfate free after Brazilian blowdry ?

      2. Only a pleasure! To be honest, the only one I can think of is Vichy Dercos but it’s quite expensive if you wash your hair every day. Perhaps cruise the shampoo aisle at Dis-Chem before you buy that to see if you can find an alternative.

  8. My hair started falling ou when I started to use this product. And now I’m worried :/ What should I do to stop my hair from falling?
    Thanks ..

    1. Hi Shila! Sorry to hear about your hair loss. It’s not likely to be caused by the shampoo as it’s ingredients are much the same as any other on the shelf. I’d chat to your doc to find out what’s really causing it. It could be something hormone or stress related.

  9. I just got my hair colored. I absolutely love the Karatin Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner.Love the results on my hair! Ive tried the expensive salon brands I really dont see a difference in my hair, except that it does make the color last. Not worth the price. If I continue to use the Kareatin Smooth collection will it be really bad for my color?

  10. I wan long hair growth so i need a sulfat free shampoo so tresme is gud for me or whivh one i already use treme kareatin smooth frim last 6 minth but hv no any grt chang

    1. Hi Sakshi! I’m not 100% sure I know what you’re asking but it sounds like you want a shampoo that’s going to speed up hair growth. Unfortunately, no such product exists. You’re just going to have to be patient. Best wishes, Leigh

  11. Hello, I am a younger girl with frizzy, curly hair. I was considering getting a keratin treatment or a Brazillian blowout, until I found out about all of the dangers of those chemicals. I have been using the Tresemme Keratin conditioner for about a month now. Is this dangerous for me? Is it something else in the chemicals added to your hair that links to the dangers? If possible, do you know of any safer routes for long-term straightening? Thank you so so much! Very worried haha.

    1. Hi Morgan! Nope, there’s nothing dangerous about Tresemme’s shampoo. It doesn’t contain any of the possibly toxic chemicals you’ll find in a Brazillian, I promise.

  12. can i use the tresemme keratin mask as a conditioner on brazilian blow out hair and stll use the sulphate free shampoo

    1. Apologies for the slow reply. Your comment ending up being marked as spam for some reason. Sure, you could! For the most part, you need to be careful when it comes to what shampoo you use when you’ve got a Brazilian. Conditioners, however, generally don’t contain SLS (it’s a soap, not a hydrator) so they’re not really a problem.
