Being a socialista is hard work – you need feet o’ steel to live in heels, a great concealer to disguise post-party eye bags (Lancome Effacernes is amazing) and a crazy amount of will power to say no to the Lindt girls… (Canapes and champers four to five nights a week are bad enough…) You’ll also need a string of gorgeous little rokkies. This is why I was super-excited to be invited to go take a look at the dresses at Divas by Design in Milnerton.
Owned by good friends Kathy and Di, Divas by Design is a beautiful little boutique-style space specialising in beautiful, one off dresses. Most of them come from the States and are hand picked from catalogues that specialise in dresses for proms or pageants. As the girls only ever import one of each dress, you can be assured of making a unique statement. Their prices range from around R1000 for a cocktail dress, R2000 for a gown and up to R4000 for a ball gown.
As for the shop itself, it’s a charming, small, intimate space that makes you feel like you’re in the private dressing room of someone (v. rich) and tres fabulous – kinda like Mariah Carey, but with better taste.
Kathy emphasises that even through you need to make an appointment to come in and browse, it’s a friendly, welcoming space where you’re free to browse without any obligation to buy. (But trust me, you’ll want to…)
Now get a load of the racks upon racks of gorgeous gowns…
They’ve also got a few nice accessories – things like body con undies and cute little clutches and purses… 
Naturally, I wasted no time in getting stuck in…
…and tried a few of them on.
Green and yellow have never really been my colours, but I tried on the ball gown (above) because it was different to the others and thought it would make a nice contrast… Surprisingly, the moment I fitted it on, I fell head over heels in love. I also wish I’d taken a close-up of the bodice; the green, blue and yellow beading was too beautiful.
I also liked this one, but didn’t have time to slip into it…
