‘Oh wait. You want me to use my time to promote your business for free?’

Hey there small business owners,

Please understand that I get invited to more events than I can attend. As a result I choose those that a) will be of maximum interest to my readers and draw more hits or b) sound like fun. Obviously I’m going to turn down a poetry reading with a cash bar to promote your new boutique in favour of an offer to experience a new spa.

I have limited hours both to attend things and then write about them. Thus I don’t promote what I don’t go to. Please don’t send me a press release regarding your event after the fact and expect me to cover it. Like I said, I’m very time poor and using the hours I have to give press to products/events that excite my readers, were fun to attend or provided me with a trade exchange.

Regarding the latter, if you don’t give me your product, I can’t/won’t talk about it as I write reviews not advertorials. Even then, sending me your stuff does not guarantee a review. If its rubbish, I’d rather not give it exposure. I prefer to point my readers in the direction of what’s awesome than spend ages justifying why I think your miracle eye cream is kak and then sit worrying that you might threaten to sue me as another brand has done in the past.

So ja. I hope this clears a few things up.

Love, love

Leigh

  1. I keep getting requests to write about people’s insurance products and dishwasher websites. Don’t people understand that your time is precious and you don’t want to waste it “generating content” to promote their business in exchange for nothing at all? It is really annoying.

  2. I loved this, I wanna copy and paste it on my blog too LOL 😉 no but really, I don’t get invited to so many events but I get so many press releases, and the thing is I can’t tell people how it is unless I’ve tried it, also, having received something doesn’t mean it’ll feature on my blog. Fab job on telling it as it is again Leigh hehe ~ have a fab public holiday tomorrow 🙂 x

  3. Threaten to sue you? That’s insane – giving you the product to review is the risk that they are taking! They can’t expect everyone to love their products!

  4. Wow.. I can’t believe that they would threaten to sue you. I’m glad you give honest reviews here and don’t just promote because they sent it.
