Tea with Mama Mio’s Sian Sutherland

Last week I was lucky enough to attend an intimate li’l Mama Mio gathering at Ellerman House in Camps Bay. Have you been there? My God, its sooo beautiful!

Just looking at those sun lounges makes me crave a G&T… and a husband who’s into clay pigeon shooting… plus an Herme’s collar for my Afghan hound…

Over canapes and Earl Grey, I got to chat to Sian Sutherland, one of the founders of Mama Mio skin care, and learn more about the brand’s philosophy which is pretty much to accept and love your bod, but still do your best to make it look as good as possible. Still, I love that they don’t pretend their body products alone are all you need to look your best; most of their products come along with a little exercise book on how to tone up targeted areas like your arms, bum and boobs.

Sian’s lovely in that she’s funny, warm and honest. I know you’d like her.

Speaking of boobs, Sian says Boob Tube is their best-selling product worldwide.

Mama Mio Boob Tube bust and neck firmer, R475. ‘Cos skin care doesn’t stop at your chin, mkay?

Anyway, the reason’s why I like Mama Mio goodies is pretty simple; they don’t screw you over when it comes to active ingredients. Many brands use clever marketing bull shizz to mislead you when it comes to how they’re formulated. For example, they’ll saw ‘our amazing firming cream contains wrinkle-busting retinol’ which is technically correct. However, they won’t tell you that they’ve only dusted the teensiest sprinkle of it into the mix so that yes, while retinol is good for wrinkles, it’s not nearly concentrated enough to have any real effect on your skin.

A good way to ensure you’re being hoodwinked when it comes to actives is to read the ingredients list. By law, manufacturers have to list their ingredients by concentration, the highest at the top, the lowest at the bottom. If ‘retinol’ is sitting at the very bottom of the list or schimgling with all the preservatives towards the end, chances are you’re not getting enough bang for your back.

Essentially, as Mama Mio goodies were originally formulated to help women at a time when their skin needed all the help it could could – during the big strrrretch that happens during pregnancy – you can rest assured that they’re going to be more than good enough for those of us who aren’t knocked up.

Personally, I’m a big fan of Mama Mio’s Omega shower cream and you can read my review over here. It’s nice and gentle on my skin and awash with the brand’s upflifting signature scent, Gravida, which to me, smells like freshly squeezed grapefruit. Yum! Even more yum? These adorbsville li’l boob and bum cupcakes that Mama Mio sent out with their invitiations and also had on offer on the day:

Cute man!

A big thank you to Sian for taking the time to chat and another dankie to the girls as Positive Dialogue for a lovely afternoon.

Love, love

Leigh
