Bloggery birthday fun at Beluga (try say that three times fast)

You guys know Elrico and Ritza from fashion blog Luxo, right?

I ADORE these guys and not just ‘cos they’re kifftastic Oos Kaapse mense soos ek (but that’s probably mostly why…)

I’m a lucky girl in that I’ve got a very interesting assortment of friends that kind of range across the board and E and R are among my young friends in that they probably don’t remember The Thundercats and never had to use a circle-dial telephone. Still, we get on famously as we’re all vain, self-absorbed bloggery types.

To give you an idea, Elrico just turned all of TWENTY TWO and it’s just KILLING him. He feels so darn OLD and even admitted to semi-welling up in his car the other day when Alphaville’s Forever Young came on the radio. Poor, poor thing… After all, sitting in a sand pit, life is a short trip and the music’s for the sad man…

Oh! And how’s this for a tragic reminiscence; back in junior school, my little friend Shazz and I used to find great fun in locking ourselves in her dad’s car, in the garage sommer, to play that very song over and over on the tape deck (along with Julian Lennon’s Saltwater), using it as the backing track to a super weird game in which we’d tell each made up uber-sad stories usually involving missing puppies to see who could make the other ‘force-cry’ the hardest. (Yip, there was just so much to do, growing up in Port Elizabeth…)

But ja, the meh-ness of getting old and crinkly aside, Elrico decided to celebrate with a very un-sad birthday dinner at Beluga where we were spoiled with delish caramel vodka shots, Kir Royale cocktails and dim sum.

No dad, I’m not ‘rondlooping’ in an ultra-short sletterig skirt; that’s a very respectable dress that just happens to ride up when you sit. Promise.

..

For the record, the crispy deep-fried chicken and mushroom wontons (R40) are seriously good.

I also tasted some of Elrico’s slow braised shoulder of lamb (R145) and had instant food envy; it was melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The best bit? Beluga’s STILL running their killer cocktail and sushi/dim sum special in that if you pop in before 7 or all day Sunday, you can buy those items for half price. Nice!

A big thank you to Adam from Caviar group for looking after us; you’re a total gem.

Love, love

Leigh
