YSL Rouge Pur Couture Vernis a Levres review with swatches

Does anyone remember L’Oreal Rouge Pulp?

I used to LOVE these and owned the red shade that Milla’s wearing in the ad.

Anyway, if you’ve missed them and been trying to find something a little similar (a shiny long-wearing lip gloss/lipstick that leaves a delicious-looking stain in its wake) you’re going to be thrilled to discover YSL’s new Rouge Pur Couture Vernis and Levres, R365.

Available in 12 shades, it reminds me of an uber-glam ultra-luxurious version of Rouge Pulp.

Don’t remember Rouge Pulp? (Or God forbid, you were possibly too young to wear make-up at the time of its reign and now I’m just showing myself up to be the tired old hag I feel this morning…) Essentially, the formulation is kind of like a shiny non-sticky lip gloss that doesn’t dry out your lips in the least. Then, as it wears off your lips, it loses its sheen and starts to look more like a lipstick. Eventually, when it’s completely gone, it leaves a fab long-lasting stain in its wake. I LOVE this because I can slick it on at night and know that even when I’ve done enough air kissing and cocktail sipping to remove it, I’ve still got a pop of colour on my lips.

I was lucky enough to be given three…

From left to right; Orange de Chine, Rose Pastelle and Rouge Philtre.

…and thought to make a few swatches for you:

From left to right as a gloss; Orange de Chine, Rose Pastel and Rouge de Philtre.

This is what they look like when the gloss wears off and you’re left with a stain:

LOVE the red shade!

All the formulas have a very slight floral scent and subtle vanilla-type taste. Application is super easy thanks to a diamond-shaped sponge tip applicator. Still, at R365 they’re not cheap, but I’ve gotten so attached to the red shade I’ll probably buy another when it runs dry! After all, I can’t think of another product that could do the same thing for less. (And yes, you could layer a matching gloss over another lip stain but to me that’s a bit of a las. And then I wouldn’t get the shameful glee of pulling such a luxe-looking little tube out of my hand bag…)

Anyway, if you want one too, you can snap it up at your nearest YSL cosmetics counter. The brand’s also running a fab promo in that if you buy one before the end of the month and plant your pout on their canvas, you could win a YSL hamper to the value of R2 500.

Love, love
