Smashbox Be Legendary lipstick review

I’m not one of those bloggers who likes to lift too many piccies off a press disk. Instead, I prefer to take my own shots to show you swatches, me WEARING the product or both. I feel this gives you guys a better idea of the product itself. Also, I don’t really like to talk about things I haven’t tried myself… Still, taking close-up piccies of yourself isn’t always fun… I can’t TELL you how much of a knob end I feel like when I sit in my room snapping cringy self-portraits. (At one point I started to feel sooo self-conscious about my enormous-looking nose, but then realised I was holding the camera too close to my face and this was warping it to Tom Cruise-ville and back…)

But ja… it’s still worth it; I’m only too happy to help show off Smashbox’s new Be Legendary lippies (R160). They’re seriously lovely and I’m keen to help spread the word in regards to their awesomeness.

The open tube is Electric Pink (matte). The packaging's a bit heavy, lending each lippie an 'expensive' feel...

Available in two finishes, ‘matte’ and ‘cream’, Be Legendary lipsticks are infused with antioxidant collagen-boosters, namely vitamin C and E. A got two shades to try Electric Pink (matte) and Pink Petal (cream).

Electric Pink (matte) on left, creamy Pink Petal on the right; both shot sans flash.

See how creamy and lustrous-looking Pink Petal is? It gets even juicier with flash:

Yum!

Of the two, I most liked Electric Pink, the matte shade.

Matte about Electric Pink...

It’s a nice dark pink that’s almost fuchsia, but not. The fact that the finish was a sophisticated matte negated any possibility of it looking too out there or ‘bont’. Still, if you’re going to attempt matte lippies, here’s rule number one; make sure your lips are 100% flake free. Any matte lipstick will immediately call negative attention to dry lips. (As I swear by lip-exfoliating Blistex DCT, I didn’t have to worry about this…)

As for creamy Pink Petal, I ADORED the texture. It’s more hydrating than the matte shade and has a gleaming glossy-looking finish that helps make your lips look ever so slightly plumper and juicier than they really are.

Creamy, lustrous-looking Pink Petal.

You might not think so from the pic, but the colour wasn’t 100% me, however. It’s a little too yellow-based and I prefer lipsticks with a bit more of a blue undertone as this makes your teeth look whiter…

Another thing I liked about both lippies? They’ve got good staying power, particularly the matte shade, and once they wear off leave a bit of a stain on your lips. Talk about great pigmentation.

If you’re near anywhere near Smashbox counter  (they’re stocked by selected Woolies and Truworths) check these guys out. I’m sure you’ll like them as much as I do.

Love, love

Leigh

    1. Thanks babe 😉 It’s mostly sweat (was one of those humid, make-up melting off kind of days) and The Body Shop Baked to Last blush in Petal. Buy one, you’ll LOVE it. X x x

  1. I tried on Electric Pink Matte at the mall yesterday and I loved it! I’m very tempted to purchase it. Do you have any idea how it compares, color wise, to NARS carthage?

    1. It’s divine, hey? Unfortunately we don’t get NARS in South Africa. I own a few of their products, but have had to buy most of them online without actually having played with them up close. Sorry babe! But if you do end up buying Electric Pink, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

      1. No problem! Thanks for the reply. Carthage is what all of the beauty editors rave about, but I think you’re on to something with the Electric Pink.
