Local make-up artist Marlinette Newman is making her own tutorial videos

Marlinette Newman is a rad local make-up artist who’s recently started making her own make-up tutorial videos. I thought I’d whore her out on my blog a bit as I kind of owe her one.

The mooiness that is Marlinette.
The mooiness that is Marlinette.

Ages back I had to put together a shoot for a mag on how to ensure your eye make-up best flatters your eyes shape. I thought we’d use a modelling agency to source the models but nooo… I had to walk around the mags office and approach their staff saying totes awkwies things like ‘Excuse me, I couldn’t help but notice that your eyes are bit too far apart. Would you mind if I featured you in a shoot for a super popular national magazine during which you’d learn how to fix that?’

Obviously most people told me to piss off but I did manage to gather a smattering of folk who were into it, although not all of their eyes shapes were a 100% match in regards to what I’d had to look for. It was on this very shoot were I met Marlinette and made her want to kill me by asking that she redo or darken the make-up ten million zillion times over. To be clear though, Marli’s an amazing make-up artist. The shoot was only a bit of a mare in that I’d pretty much given her a bunch of randomly shaped bricks but expected her to build the freakin’ Death Star from Lego’s new Star Wars collection.

Come on Marlinette, you can do it. Just let the force be with you.

Oh! And it gets worse. The girl whose eyes were (sort of) too close together never pitched so I ended up having to fill in for her.

Me: ‘I know, I know. I reckon just do what you can and they can just Photoshop my eyes so that they sit real close. That’ll work, right?!’

It was at this point that Marlinette kind of tossed down one of her brushes and muttered ‘Fine. It’s not like I have to use this in my porti…’ which is the freelancer equivalent of ‘How the hell did I end up working on this terrible, terrible gig?!’

Anyway, despite n bietjie dramz, the shoot turned out great; partly due to Photoshop but mostly because of Marlinette’s incredible patience, skill and all around awesomeness. When you have a mo, please go check out her videos. The one on mascara’s super informative.

Love, love

Leigh
