Dr. Rey ‘From Your Lips’ instant lip plumper review

I’m not a big Dr. Rey fan, but then again, maybe I’m just biased. Something about the dude reminds me waaay too much of an old high school boyfriend that dumped me not once, but twice.

Jason? Is that you?

I’m also not completely in love with his Sensual Solutions cosmetics range. While some of the formulations are decent, others are unremarkable and overpriced. And don’t get me started on the product names… With creams labeled ‘Fully Loaded’, ‘Eye Full’ and ‘All Night Long’, you’d be forgiven for thinking the dude had his own range of intimate lubes. As it is he’s just created an underwear lines so perhaps it’s only a matter of time…

Anyway, when his lip plumper arrived my first thought was ‘Vok. I’m now going to have to call up the PR co and do the whole thanks but no thanks spiel…’ (People don’t realise I don’t review everything I receive… if it’s kak, I’m not going to waste my time telling you about it…) So ja… I wasn’t too excited. But then I got curious after reading positive reviews on line and eventually I ripped the bloody thing open and gave it a bash. And what do you know… I actually rather like it!

Dr Rey Sensual Solutions ‘From Your Lips’ lip plumper, R380.

The gloss is packaged in a metal click pen and features a brush-on tip, similar to Stila Lip Glaze. In regards to its promises, it claims to give you a ‘perfect pout all without collagen injections’ by hydrating and plumping. This in turn helps ‘elimate fine lines’. While it doesn’t directly say that it’ll give you the same results as what you’d get from a few shots it kind of alludes to that and that irritates me a bit. I had lip injections back in the day and let me tell you, there isn’t a gloss on earth that can deliver anything even close those results. Still, it does plump (a bit) and hydrate which in turn helps eliminate any fine dehydration lines.

Ingredients-wise, you’re looking at a mix of moisturisers (mineral oil, castor seed oil, hyauronic acid…) and ‘plumpers’ in the form of vannilyl butyl ether, ginger root oil and chilli pepper resin. It’s these latter dudes that cause the gloss to tingle on your lips while it stimulates your micro-ciculatory system. This is what causes them to swell up a tad while flushing a bit pinker than usual. But still, I have to stress the words ‘a tad’ because while it does plump, the results are minimal. Nobody asked me what I did to my lips as my results weren’t very dramatic. But in saying that, it sure does feel nice. I like the tingle; it’s nice and strong and lasts for at least 20 minutes. I also really like how the gloss smells (and tastes) like mango. In this way it reminds me of one of my favourite lip glosses ever; YSL Golden Gloss (which for the record doesn’t just come in gold. I’m a big fan of No. 4 Fuchsia…) In regards to texture, it’s nice and thick-ish with non-sticky feel, kinda like Estee Lauder’s ‘Pure Colour’ gloss.

Oh! And I almost forgot… All of Dr Rey’s products includes a mix of six different plant extracts from the Brazilian rain forest that he refers to as his AActive6-Exotics complex. In the lip plumper, however, they’ve been thrown in last alongside the preservatives so I’m not sure if they’re really going to have any real ‘effect’.

Want to try Dr. Rey’s goodies for yourself? You’ll find them in selected Edgars and the odd salon. For a full list of stockists click here.

  1. gee R620 is kinda pricey coz it’s basically a lip moisturiser. Soooo you had lip injections hey, I’m thinking of doing that later this year, would you do it again????? do your lips feel the same sensation etc after, and was kissing as good as before??????

    Restylene? which filler?

Hey if you don’t want to use and review everything that gets sent your way, stick it in a box I’ll come collect all the stuff in a few months when I’m in Cape Town. yeah not gonna happen 🙂

    1. My mistake; the correct price is actually R380. Still expensive, but I suppose some plain old lip glosses cost just as much, i.e. Dior etc.

Re lip augmentation; I was offered free Juvederm lip filler about two years ago so I went for it, mostly out curiosity than anything else. It basically increased the size of my top and bottom lip and lasted about six months. I didn’t like the way my bottom lip looked for the first month. I felt like it made me look ‘dik lip’ or ‘misluk’. Sensation-wise, everything’s exactly the same. I wouldn’t do it again simply because I don’t really need bigger lips. If, as I get older, they thin out to a point that I’m bothered by it, I may do it again. It’s something I’d only recommend to someone who really feels they need it as opposed to just wants it sommer so. If your doc doesn’t know what they’re doing, there’s a chance you’ll end up looking too ‘done’ or with an irregular lip line.

  2. ya I agree you don’t need it! if you can wear red lipstick and look good you know you’re fine 🙂 I dont want to do my bottom lip at all, just the top one to balance it out with the bottom one, at least its temporary, will give it a try then since the sensation stays the same. Definitely don’t want duck lips.

Thanks so much for your reply, now I feel more at ease having it done!

  3. Oh I hate him too! Him and Dr. Phil and all those other day time TV characters aimed at desperado housewives. Hate, hate, hate!!!

  4. I am so off his products and him after meeting him at the Cosmedica 2011. He kept on dissing other products and went on about how his products “are the most expensive in the world and can compared to a Maserati” Nonsensical no? . Has he not heard of Sisley and La Prairie. It was just surreal listening to such a self-promoting talk from him -crazy.Also lots of my patients who have tried it say either that it is ineffective or that they had an adverse reaction. Sadly I also got caught up in the “hype” when the product was launched and bought his travel kit for a Thailand trip. Bad life decision although the cleanser was okay.

Thanks for the great unbiased review though. Strange that you had a lip aug with Perlane – usually a softer product like the Restylane Lidocaine is used.

    1. Hahahah… This made me laugh 😉 Ja, you’re right, sorry man. It was actually Juvederm, got confused ‘cos I was trying to think of ‘the one that’s not restylane’. (Have corrected it). Chick used the one that’s got a little bit of anaesthetic in it (prob lidocaine too). She also applied a numbing cream beforehand and it didn’t hurt at all even though I had what felt like a zillion shots. Will see if I can find the write up I did for it online. (This was back when I was writing a beauty column for Women24 and not everything I did for them is still on the site.) X x

      1. Hi Leigh I was just reading your lip aug experience again in the comment section. Restylane has something new out – Restylane lip refresh – it’s more about hydrobalance rather than all-out volume . So it works for extremely dry lips or for patients on Roaccutane or if people want to get a bit of courage before going for a lip aug. Wish you were in Jo’burg – would do a treatment for you if you like. Here is some stuff on it –

      2. Ag dankie man. If I’m ever in Jozi I’ll come a knocking. And I don’t mind the link at all ‘cos it’s relative and informative. x x

  5. I wonder what people would think off the bat if they saw a Dr Rey product called, “Butt Fill”, I’m pretty sure Kim Kardashian would only be the second image to come to mind.
