Spotted Bourjois’s new mascara, Volume Glamour MAX Definition, on the shelves yet? With its cute hot pink packaging it’s kind of hard to miss:

It promises ‘killer volume’ and boasts a special 500 bristle rubber brush that aims to target each and every lash. It’s also got a special tip with ‘lash micro-captors’ to reach even the tiniest lashes. Formula-wise it contains volume-boosting agents and natural wax, vitamin E and B5 to protect and condition as well as black pearl extract to create an intense ‘luminous black’ look that lasts for up to 16 hours.
So, did it deliver?
In regards to volume, oh yes. It definitely creates a nice lush-looking lash line and the formula dries to a very ‘black-looking’ black as opposed to a dark charcoal. I didn’t think it was all that good at ‘defining’, however, in that it would go on with a couple of clumps that had to be carefully brushed out before you achieved a sleeker, more ‘separated’ look.

Initially, I found the brush, which is bigger than it looks, a little awkward to use. I kept on getting mascara on my upper eyelid when I tried to reach the inner corners of my eye. Then I realised what they meant by ‘special tip’. I see that the bristles aren’t just wrapped around the brush barrel but are on the tip too. Instead of expecting to reach your inner most lashes by thrusting the brush at a horizontal angle into the corner of your eye, you should come down at a vertical angle and dab at your teensiest lashes from above.
In regards to it’s staying power, it’s really very good in that once it’s on it sits tight and doesn’t flake off throughout the day. In fact, it’s so clamped to your lashes that I couldn’t take it off with just a baby wipe and had to break out an oil-based make-up remover. (If you’re looking for one, both Lancome Bi-Facil and Clinique Take the Day Off are serious goodies…)
Overall, I prefer Bourjois’s Volume Glamour mascara simply because it delivers much the same result but has a more conventional brush that doesn’t require getting used to. In fact, I’ve yet to appreciate a mascara with one of these new ‘rubber bristle’ brushes as opposed to the regular mini toilet brush one. Now tell me… am I, like, super boring and stuck in my ways for that or do you feel the same? And has anyone found a rubber bristle mascara that’ll make me come around to the fact that they’re actually totes amaze and I’m just full of kak? Let me know, I’d love to hear it.
Love, love
