If you’re a Dermalogica fan and love retinol as much as I do you’re in for a treat! The big wrinkle-busting kahuna you’ve been waiting for is finally here and that’s Dermalogica Overnight Retinol Repair 1% (R1 680, available exclusively at professional care centres).
This baby’s already won US O magazine’s Spring Beauty Award and will probably snap up more in future as its beautifully formulated. Aside from the fact that it serves up retinol at a super effective 1% in packaging that’s going preserve it’s potency, it’s also chockful of other skin-loving ingredients.
Now, before I break this baby down, let’s just get in a quick recap as to why retinol is your friend. For one, it’s proven to help slow down the breakdown of collagen and firm up your skin by ‘thickening’ it from the bottom layers up. It also helps speed up cellular turn over so it’s usefully in blitzing pigmentation provided you wear a good sunscreen (Dermalogica reccommends an SPF 30 as retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun) and rid you of any marks left behind from the odd spot.
Specifically speaking, Dermalogica’s retinol has been micro-encapsulated which means it can travel to the deeper layers of your skin and break down slowly so your skin has prolonged exposure to it as opposed to getting it all in one whack and then being left ‘hungry for more’ come 3AM. This drip feed exposure, however, doesn’t minimise its potency in the least. If anything, it amplifies it.
So, what else is in the mix? A lot! So let’s break out some bullet points, shall we?
* You’re also getting antioxidant collagen-encouraging vitamin C, something that also helps brighten your complexion
* A powerful peptide that plays a role in firming up your skin
* A licorice extract that soothes and also brightens (hope you’re ready to glow!)
* Hydrators like squalane from Brazilian sugar cane and a sugar-derived molecule that helps your skin retain its natural moisture
Now, if you’re new to retinol, 1% isn’t a good place to start in the same way that, if you’re new to running and want to do a marathon entering the comrades isn’t a good place to start. You have to build up a tolerance to it first which is why it’s good to use something serving up a lower concentration that you can use every other day. There are lots of products out there offering retinol at lower concentrations and Dermalogica’s Overnight Retinol Repair (it contains 0,5% retinol) is one of them.
Once you’ve adjusted to using something like that, you can break out the big guns and that’s Overnight Retinol Repair 1%. Still, even then, Dermalogica doesn’t want you to apply anything you’re not ready for and that’s where this product’s aloe-vera infused buffer cream comes in. It’s sold along with the serum and, if you’re worried 1% might be too strong, you can mix the two together before application to dilute its potency until your skin acclimatises.
Being a long-time super strong retinol user I went straight into the 1% and it’s been great. No peeling, no redness, no drama. I’ve been using it every second night (sometimes two nights in a row) and life’s been a dream. Still, I did try it with the buffer cream to get an idea of what it feels like and liked that it’s a lovely light-weight feeling lotion that absorbs in a flash.
Now, let’s get to the bit I know you’re waiting for – the giveaway! I have an Overnight Retinol Repair 1% just waiting for your red hot lovin’ and there are several ways to enter. The first?
Hit me up in the comments section below telling me which of Dermalogica’s products is your favourite or what you’re most keen to try. (There’s no right or wrong answer. I’m interested!)
This competition is open to South African residents only and a winner will be drawn at 5pm on 13 October 2017.
Good luck girls!
