Whenever I hear the world ‘ceramides’ only one brand ever springs to mind; Elizabeth Arden. Their bestselling award-winning little gold capsules are almost as iconic as their Eight Hour cream.
Still, most women don’t really know what ceramides are, so let me fill you in… In a nutshell, ceramides are fats that occur naturally in your skin’s protective outer layer. As you get older, your ceramide supply starts to dimish and by the time you reach 60 your skin can easily be 30% thinner than when you were in your twenties. If you use a ceramide cream, however, it can help bump up your skin’s protective ‘barrier’ which will help you to retain more moisture among among other things.
But ja… ceramide 101 aside, let me tell you about Arden’s new line of ceramide-rich creams specially formulated for women in their 50s; the Ceramide Premiere Intense Moisture and Renewal range. It includes a day cream with SPF 30, an ‘overnight regeneration cream’ and an eye cream.

Each makes use of mega-moisturising ceramides and nourishing shea butter as well as nutrient-rich brown algae and retinyls* that can help boost cellular turnover and collagen production to improve the look of wrinkles and sun damage.* Other ingredients worth a mention include antioxidant vitamin E and skin softening hydrolized soy protein.
Texture-wise, each cream feels absolutely delish on the skin in that they’re creamy and rich, making them best suited to medium to dry skin types. I also like how they’re slightly pearlised, so your skin has a little glow from the moment you put them on. In all, they’re an indulgent way to hydrate, soothe, diminish the appearance of fine lines and pigmentation while the day cream’s great SPF will protect you from any further sun damage.
They aren’t on the shelves just yet, but should be in store by the end of the month. The day and night creams are R765 each while the eye cream costs R565.
Love, love

*Retinyls are a mild form of retinol. They’ll help diminish the appearance of wrinkles and sun damage the same way retinol does, but aren’t as hard guns in their efficacy. Still, they’re less likely to cause irritation and dryness. If you’ve got sensitive skin or are more concerned with lush moisture and comfort as opposed to turning back the hands of time, Arden’s new offering is a good pick. If, however, you still want to be agressive in regards to klapping wrinklies, consider using Ceramide Premiere on top of a retinol serum. When the last of my RoC retinol serum runs dry, I’ll probably buy this SkinMedica one.
