Galderma’s Differin gel is now available over the counter in the states

Hi girls

This is just a quick heads up to let you know that Galderma’s Differin Gel is now available OTC in the states so you can buy it online from pharmacies that ship worldwide and even Amazon. (I’ve just checked and Amazon is definitely shipping to SA.)

If you’re a regular reader you’ll know I’ve raved about this previously prescription only product in the past. Essentially, it’s my go to bestie to blitz a nasty blind pimple. The moment one pops up I slick it on morning and night and within two days the beast is almost gone.

In the past, I’ve asked for a script for it whenever I’ve seen a doc or hit up a dodge-looking pharmacy who looks like it will hand over anything. I also make a point of grabbing it when I travel in the east and still have two tubes from my last visit to Vietnam. (Dodge pharmacies a-go-go!)

Excuse the shitballs pic. I’m writing at night and only take pics in natural light.

Anyway, if it’s something you’d like to try yourself its become a lot easier to get hold of.

Love, love

P.S. I’m currently working on a big copywriting gig so forgiveness if I’m only posting every second day for the next little while. Gotta earn them Ronds, you know. But I’ll be back on all cylinders soon.

UDATE: Oops! Last night I wrote that this was available OTC in South Africa but it was a miscommunication. I’ve since clarified with the pharmacist who gave it to me and she was saying that as its recently been declared an OTC product in the states so she didn’t feel too fussed about giving it to without a script as it would soon be fine here too. Apologies for the miscommunication and off to Amazon you go!

  1. Hi Leigh

I got so excited when I read this post…can you advise if there is a certain date as to when this will be available OTC, I phoned Galderma here in SA and they advised that it is still a scripted product? what now? is it supposed to be top secret?

    1. Hi Shaunees! You’re right. Apologies. It’s not available OTC in SA. Just in the states. I’ve since clarified with my pharmacist. She was saying it’ll be OTC here ‘soon’ as its now OTC in the states in explaining her willingness to just hand it over sommer. I don’t want to get her into trouble but that was the logic apparently. She doesn’t know when ‘soon’ is though. But on the upside you can now toss it in your trolley via stores like Amazon with no script required. I’ve checked. They do ship it to SA. Again sorry to mess you around!

      1. No problem at all Leigh…thanks for getting back to me:)…will keep nagging and checking with the pharmacists at Dischem, to see if ‘soon’ is here….hehehehe

  2. Hi Leigh! How much is it please?

I just want to find out price beforehand, so when I go to the chemist I know I got enough bucks! (Its so embarrassing to run short!) Also I want to make sure I get charged accurately, because I find some private pharmacists that I don’t frequent regularly, happen to inflate the prices when I pop in once in a blue moon…

Also, I know a really corrupted chemist, so he’s bound to hand it over without a script, lol.

But you know what? since south africa is pretty much worth junk now, I guess its okay for everybody to be corrupted; I mean, even the president is, lol.

But seriously, as an unemployed person, I would rather just pay for the medicine itself, than a script from some quack doctor AND the product too. Its way too costly, especially because the dermatologists charge waaay too much for just writing a prescription. I mean really, talk about easy money…

Im currently suffering acne and my face is an explosion. Please tell me if this differin also be used whilst orally consuming oratane Leigh? Or will it be too much retinoids you think? I don’t want to suffer acidosis or something! Perhaps I can go onto differin for future breakouts, after I’ve finished my oratane? Also, I’ve got some really rough texture in the central parts of my face-its like small tiny bumps, and it wasn’t there before starting the oratane! Also, my skin has some really dry patches because of this. What can I use leigh? My current moisturisers aren’t working and I’m feeling so depressed now, because the quality of my skin has just degraded badly in two weeks! ๐Ÿ˜ฅ please, if you have any advice, ill appreciate it.

Thanks for a great blog leigh. Your advice helps me a lot! More than any dermatologist I’ve ever been to! Whenever there’s something wrong with me, and I’m looking ugly, I think, ‘let me go and check out Leighs blog and ask for help! Leigh knows a lot. Leigh’s smart!’

You’re like my own personal beauty advisor ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hi leigh. Sorry for so many long comments.

I just wanted to add, that I know blogs are only for general information and not personalised advice. But the only reason I ask you so many questions, is just for extra advice, based on your knowledge as you are a beauty blogger for so many years and you know about so many products I hadn’t even heard of before I started reading your blog. Also I value your opinion.

On a side note, I find the in store service from most beauty counters/chemists/ and even doctors rooms is really lacking in south africa. Standards are really low in this country, and that’s why I prefer to read blogs and do other research on medical websites and self medicate or self treat my problems related to hair/skin care etc instead of getting professional advice… I think that’s why blogs have become so popular…i guess its a dismal opinion or outlook that I have, but its only because the customer service that I have experienced is so bad and leaves me dis-satisfied. I don’t even bother going to the derm/gp or even salon anymore, because none of them can help me…
